The South Adams Savings Bank was chartered in 1869 and has operated
continuously in Berkshire County since its inception. The Bank is a
mutual savings bank organized under the laws of the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts.
Originally the bank’s primary mission was serving the banking
needs of the residents of the Town of Adams. Growth within the
branch system expanded the area served to include the Northern
Berkshires. The textile industry caused the town to expand through
the late 1800’s to the mid 1900’s. During this time the population
increased and reached a peak of approximately 13,000 in the 1910’s.
The bank continued to focus its efforts on meeting the banking needs
of local families as textile activities waned in the mid 50’s, and
the local population started to decline.
The bank’s original location was part of the Collins Block at 26
Center Street. The building was damaged by a fire in 1912 but was
refurbished. In 1923 the bank expanded into a new brick building
located at 2 Center Street. Several expansions have occurred over
the years with one in 1972 and another in 1987. The expansion in
1972 resulted when the bank acquired space from an adjacent retail
store. The 1987 expansion resulted from the acquisition of a
hardware store. This building houses the main office branch plus the
bank’s administrative offices.
The bank opened its first branch in 1970 in Cheshire,
Massachusetts. A second branch was opened in Williamstown,
Massachusetts in 1988. A free standing drive-up was constructed and
opened at our main office location in July 1999.
